Amendments to Oregon Smoke Management Plan and the Oregon State Implementation Plan for Air Quality   Oregonians have the chance to comment on the Oregon Smoke Management Plan, a document that outlines ways to manage and minimize the impacts of smoke all across the state. The plan specifically aims to reduce the public health risks caused by prescribed forest burning, while at the same time trying to reduce forest fuels that can cause major wildfires.   Each year the Department of Forestry manages approximately 150,000 acres of prescribed forestry burning across the state, much of which in close proximity to populated areas.  Many residents contact DEQ about smoke in their community, and this is an opportunity for people to comment on the proposed changes to the plan.  Some of the proposed changes include: Additional provisions to protect visibility at Crater Lake National Park and the Kalmiopsis Wilderness, both Oregon Class I areas. Additional provisions to encourage greater use of alternatives to burning and emission reduction techniques. Eliminating the La Grande Special Protection Zone and reducing the size of the Medford SPZ boundary. Smoke monitoring for prescribed burns over 2,000 tons. The Klamath County Air Quality call is a forecast of what the Air Quality will be. As you can see in the chart below, our advisory has kept the air moderate to unhealthy for sensitive groups.Had we called it Yellow or Green on those days our Air Quality would have reached unhealthy for all.

* Synopsis... strong high pressure will strengthen again this
weekend into next week. A trough passage around Thursday may
weaken the high pressure slightly but this trough is not
expected to be strong enough to remove the stable air mass.

* Locations include: Beatty... Bly... Chemult... Crescent...
Gilchrist... Sprague River... Lakeview... Altamont... Klamath
Falls.

* Impacts... the strong inversion will limit mixing of the air.
This will cause airborne particulates and pollutants to be
trapped resulting in the potential of deteriorating air
quality. Those sensitive to diminished air quality should
take precautions to limit exposure.

Upper level ridge is building into the Pacific Northwest today and will continue building over the region through Tuesday.  Air mass is stabilizing today and will be very stable tomorrow with very light wind flow.  Burning will need to be curtailed considerably.

 

    EXTENDED DISCUSSION

 

Upper level ridge will remain entrenched over the state through the week keeping mixing poor and wind flow light. Expect limited burn opportunities.
